Gameplay
An space-based action RPG like its predecessor, gameplay in Mass Effect 2 revolves around the player's particular version of Commander Shepard and continuing development of this character as the game proceeds. As the game opens a variety of character classes are made available to the player, with talents, both exclusive and general, associated with each. With experience these talents are leveled up, resulting in the unlocking of related abilities and/or entirely new talents. The player has the ability to customize their Commander Shepard in a number of ways including physical appearance, gender, and certain aspects of their personal history, with the rub being that these choices can influence things like available missions, dialogue choices with non-player characters (NPCs), and character background.

Accompanying this main character are a number of preset supporting characters that the player can direct and develop relationships with, which again, will alter the outcome of the story. All the characters from the original game make an appearance in Mass Effect 2, but the immediate characters surrounding Commander Shepard are new. Additional new features that players can expect to experience include new alien races; a more realistic damage system; a new heavy weapons system allowing for maximum damage; a regenerative health system; a dramatic increase in the number of character animations available to Shepard; and updates to the dialogue mechanic used when conversing with NPCs.

Integration with the Original Mass Effect
Mass Effect 2 allows players of the original Mass Effect game to import save games to continue the story of their own Commander Shepard. In doing this, the decisions that were made in the first game will affect the events of the second game. In addition, characters from the first game will return, as long as they were not killed off by the player in the first game. On the other hand, new players coming to the series for the first time in Mass Effect 2 will start a brand-new character, discover the events of the previous games as they progress and embark on a thrilling stand-alone adventure that does not require the previous game for play.

Customer Reviews for  'Mass Effect 2'

better looking, bur games seem to get shorter
It was a fun game till you beat it in just over 40 hours, shame they are just making games that are just parts of a story now. on the down sides never got the cerebus network to run with the code they gave me so no downloadable content for me, kind of sucks, remember having the same problems with another game they produces dragon age as well.

BRILLIANT! Keep up the awesome work Bioware
Do yourself a favour and play the first Mass Effect before playing this one. The experience is just more comprehensive and enjoyable. Some forums and reviews really over analyze things, but the experience is definately entertaining. Interactive story telling at it's best. This is a series to own if you are any kind of SCI-FI or fan of fiction in general.

Did not work mid game
I wish I could have played the game in its entirely. The game did not have the ability to allow me to select the decodings of computer pads and towers which meant I could not proceed in the game. After reloading the game and reading manual it did not help. I would give it a 5 star otherwise.

Incredibly Epic in all Proportions!
I'll admit the first one was great on it's own, add the fact that the decisions you made in it affects the outcomes of this sequel, along with seeing the cinematic and launch trailers, I just had to own it!

Compared to the previous title, gameplay has been switched up in tads. The combat system is definitely more intense and requires a bit more strategy than the first, I often find myself much more involved in the combat than in Mass Effect (the first). But it certainly takes a little adjusting to, if you're used to the first game.

The new upgrade system is a neat feature as well, along with a better economy system, where in the first games, you're pretty much flooded with credits and can pretty much buy anything and everything (especially in the 2nd playthru), now the economy system is a bit more down to earth (so to speak), and you find yourself budgeting your credits! Resources used for your upgrades is a great concept as well, you do have to play and budget your resources wisely in order to milk out the greatest upgrades and bonuses. Though I sort of missed the wide weapon selection you're able to skim through from the first game.

Storyline is pretty good, start to end, never found myself being completely detached from the game experience. The only bad things I can say about this game is the lack of side missions you can go on, they're probably only few dozen side missions in this game compared to the near-hundred in the first game. I also missed hearing comment feedback from your AI teammates. In the first game, you can always select one of your teammates to hear their comments on where you're at and the current situation; in Mass Effect 2, you're no longer able to do that and only receive teammate comments at certain points of interest.

Besides those annoyances, Mass Effect 2 has topped my personal Top 10 Games list, and has me dreading the 3rd and final installment. Why? For those of you who have played it, refer to the very last scene at the end of the game before it cuts into the credits, you'll know why I'll be screaming "We're all gonna Die!" in the 3rd game.

Worth Every Penny
Masse Effect 2 is a very entertaining combination of First Person Shooter and Role Playing game. I love my Cod 4, Counter Strike and MW2 etc games. This was a lot of fun to play. Something you can play for hours, or hop on and off quickly. At the end of the day...This was a really fun game to play. The graphics are great and the storyline is terrific. You won't be disapponted if you like FPS/RP games. I was bummed when I finished it.
