Software error cost me $900 |
|
Due to a software error, H&R Block's At Home service miscalculated my education credits, causing my refund to be $900 too much. Four months later, I was notified I have 30 days to pay it back to the IRS. H&R Block's guarantee says they'll pay interest and penalties if they make a mistake... but only until August 31. They won't pay any of my interest or penalties after that date, and has left me no other options to avoid the penalties. $900 is a lot of money to produce in 30 days, and I will be charged a significant amount of money by the IRS and risk audit for filing an "incorrect" return and "claiming" credits I wasn't entitled to. I will never use any H&R Block product again. One would think a company of this size would have double checked their software sometime before I used it at the end of February. |

It seems every year I keep switching from turbotax to H&R Block and back again the next year. In some years H&R Block is better and in some years Turbotax is better, but I get my taxes done and correctly each and everytime without any problems. |

State eFile not free |
The software worked well, but state eFile is not free.
I used H&R Block At Home 2009 Deluxe Federal + State + eFile [Formerly TaxCut] to help file taxes for a single person with one W2, no mortgage, no investments, no itemized deductions. The program worked well. It calulated the same return amount as the CA's franchise board's efile website.
I was extremely disappointed that the state eFile was not included, only the Federal was. This was not clear to me from the way it was worded on Webanix's product page and on the product box. However, I was able to eFile on the CA franchise board's website, I just had to answer all questions there again. |

Great Product for Doing Taxes on the Cheap |

I have used H&R Block Tax Software for years. Webanix offered it at the Best Price, so I grabbed it. The only drawback with the Software is that the State E-File is not Free. They give you 5 Free Federal E-Files, but how many people do you know will have to file 5 Federal Returns. For my state, LA, the cost was $19.99. They need to have 2 Free Federal E-Files and 2 Free State E-Files or something close to this. Otherwise, it is always cheaper than Turbo Tax. |
